Makibi James

Makibi James (born Elias Ngugi Ngunje, 1959 in Gatanga, Murang’a County, Kenya) was a pivotal figure in Kikuyu benga music and is widely regarded as one of the influential voices of the genre’s second generation.

His musical journey began as a bass vocalist with John Ndichu’s band, and in 1986 he released his first recording. Over the years, Makibi produced several evergreen songs, including Nguhe Kirira, Susi Koki, Gikuyu Nitunyitane, and Hau Niho Turi. His music was distinguished by strong vocal harmonies and lyrics that addressed social, cultural, and political themes within the Kikuyu community.

Beyond his recordings, Makibi was known for his generosity and mentorship. He supported fellow musicians such as Kamande wa Kioi and the late John DeMathew, and he also contributed to community causes, including support for Allamano Special School in Nyeri.

Makibi James passed away on June 6, 2008, but his music remains a constant presence on Kikuyu airwaves, carried forward by fans and family determined to keep his legacy alive.
